Lyrics:

She had a bad childhood
WHILE She was very young
So don’t judge her too badly
She had a schizophrenic mother
Who worked in the gutter
WOULD HAVE SOLD HERSELF
To the devil gladly
What a sad environment
A BUGRIDDEN tenement
And when they couldn’t pay the rent
It was ’cause her father was out
Getting sicker
OH, THE STONE’S BEEN CAST
And blood’s thicker than water

And the sins of the family fall on the daughter
All the sins of the family fall on the daughter

At the age of 16 she had been around more
Than any girl about 30
And the high I. Q.’s who condemned her
Knew she was a product of poor heredity
It’s a fictitious fact when you fall on your back
You can backtrack failure with inspection without exception

All the sins of the family fall on the daughter
All the sins of the family fall on the daughter

Oh the devil is open to all of us
HEAVEN SELECTS just a precious few
IT TAKES AN INSIDE PULL TO GET GABRIEL make an angel out of you
One CAN’T LIVE A LIE then expect to die
With a soul in paradise
You know you gotta pay the price
Like you oughtta
Blood’s thicker than water

And the sins of the family fall on the daughter
All the sins of the family fall on the daughter

Analysis:

The third (and usually last) cover played during Crash Wisdom concerts, Sins Of A Family is also the oldest of these songs. Written by the highly-regarded songwriter PF Sloan (best known for penning the folk classic ‘Eve of Destruction’), the song was a fall 1965 single that only remained on the charts for a fortnight (peaking at #87) and is accordingly fairly obscure. Lyrically the song is believed to be about teen prostitution, taking an unusually sympathetic perspective where it is seen as the product of a ‘sad environment’ and a bad family situation. Like Theme For An Imaginary Western, no Michael-sung versions besides Crash Wisdom’s live performances are currently known. Mislabelled on the original Crash Wisdom bootleg recordings as ‘Sins of the Family’.
